I personally think that VW builds the sturdiest motors out of any major production cars. I never had any engine problems with any of my VW's and I've always done 100% of the work on them. My MK3 had 150k miles on it before I sold it and a compression test showed the motor to be in spectacular condition.

Any engine can last 1 million miles or more if you maintian it. Just a vw engine will need more maintiance than a jap engine. I reccomend avoid german.
